One of Bristol’s oldest restaurants to close

By Martin Booth  Wednesday May 31, 2023

After almost 50 years, the owners of one of Bristol’s oldest restaurants have decided to close in order “to go out at the top of our game and our terms”.

La Grotta on Union Street opened in 1981 but for a decade before that was known as the Bali.

In a statement, family members Andrea, Beverley, Alfonso and Anita said that “it has been an absolute privilege to serve you all and (be) part of the celebrations, from weddings, Christenings, proposals, office parties and school events”.

“After nearly half a century, we hope that we have provided a welcoming and warm space for our amazing food and provided a few memories along the way,” the family wrote on Facebook.

“It is not a decision that we have taken lightly, we are all one big family, but ultimately, it is the right thing for us. We want to go out at the top of our game and our terms.

“We hope to welcome you all for our last ever week of trading, so please get in touch to book a table or just pop in for an Aperol or Moretti for a chat and to say goodbye!”

Many regulars at La Grotta have reacted with sadness to the news.

“We have been eating at La Grotta during our many Bristol visits for over 15 years, sometimes 2 or 3 nights in a row!” wrote Annette Connelly.

“We’ve thought about eating elsewhere, just for a change, but decided you would be too hard to beat and we always enjoy your food and fun staff so much. Best of luck to you all. Where will I get my chocolate orange cheesecake fix now?!!!! You will be VERY missed.”

Susan White said: “Thank you to this fantastic family for providing us with such great food friendship and fun over the years! We started eating here on 1978 ! The rest is history and too many parties ending upside down…

“The welcome is always warm nothing ever too much trouble, the staff simply amazing and an absolute pleasure to have dined at the best restaurant in Bristol.”
