20 years, 55 million pies and a 9,000-mile-long sheet of pastry later, and Bristol’s family piemaking business is still going strong!

Back in December 2003, Jon Simon and Tristan Hogg opened a little bakery and pie shop in a former printworks at 24, Stokes Croft.  The Bristol brothers-in-law had done all the renovations themselves, kitting out the bakery with an assortment of second-hand industrial equipment (most of which they weren’t entirely sure how to use…!)  On their first day, they sold 10 pies (most to Tristan’s mum) but it wasn’t long before word spread and a queue formed most lunchtimes, especially on ‘Pieday Fridays’.  Stalls at London’s Borough Market and at Glastonbury followed in 2004, putting Pieminister pies and the now-legendary Mothership feast on the map.  The two decades since have been a pie-fuelled roller coaster ride and you can read all about it in Live & Eat Pie! Jon and Tristan’s new cookbook is filled to the brim with 80 amazing new pie recipes, interspersed with the story of their mission to become the UK’s most sustainable pie makers.

Fast forward to now, and the pies are still made in Bristol, just up the road in in Southmead, the range includes a deforestation-free jackfruit ‘steak’ pie that shocked the pie world when it beat all the beef pies to be crowned Supreme Champ at last year’s British Pie Awards, they became one of the first UK restaurant businesses to become a B Corp, and Jon and Tristan still share a desk at 24 Stokes Croft.
