Pieminister’s gluten-free Mooless Moo crowned UK’s best pie

By Martin Booth  Saturday Mar 12, 2022

A gluten-free and meat-free Pieminister pie has been crowned the Supreme Champion at the British Pie Awards.

It is the first time ever that a pie in the free-from category has taken the overall crown, with the jackfruit dish beating almost 1000 entries in the annual competition held in Melton Mowbray.

Mooless Moo is a jackfruit ‘steak’, gluten-free craft ale and black pepper pie, and one of three gluten-free pies made by Pieminister at their factory in Brentry.

Chairman of the Melton Mowbray Pork Pie Association and host of the British Pie Awards, Matthew O’Callaghan, said that the Mooless Moo “was a superb pie, it looked good, had a nice even golden bake”.

O’Callaghan said: “The pastry was crunchy complimented by the moist filling which had ‘bite’ and the balance of flavours in the pie was just right.

“Up to now, gluten-free pies were always compared unfavourably with other pies. With this pie, gluten-free pies are now equal to any other pie.

“Being vegetarian and gluten-free, Pieminister’s Mooless Pie is an ‘everybody’s pie’, be they vegetarian or meat eater, gluten tolerant or intolerant.

“Serve this at a meal and almost everyone’s a winner! Congratulations Pieminister!”

But not everyone is happy. Simon Bell, who owns a butcher’s in London, told the Sun “it’s outrageous that a traditional meat-based pie didn’t win”.

He said: “It feels like the competition organisers are trying too hard to be woke. There’s such a wide and varied choice of meat pies they could have gone for instead of this one.

“Although, Pieminister do have a reputation for making very tasty pies.”
