Reopening date revealed for ‘iconic’ pub
The team that is bringing a Bristol pub back to life say their vision is “to keep the iconic, brutalist aesthetic, but make it a place for all to enjoy”.
The Colosseum closed in June but is now officially set to reopen on February 3 following a major refurbishment, bringing with it pints, premium cocktails and Mediterranean-inspired small plates.
Its new custodians are the owners behind the Mothers’ Ruin and the Crown close to St Nick’s Market, who bought the building on a corner on Redcliff Hill so that it could be retained as a pub rather than being turned into flats.

On the menu at the Colosseum will be albondigas, prawn and feta arancini and Moroccan chicken wings for meat eaters and, for veggie options, choose between tabbouleh salad, chickpea and courgette Fritters, halloumi and Mediterranean veg skewers.
Bar snacks include chorizo al vino and padrón peppers and for dessert, there is coffee and chocolate panna cotta, lemon and pistachio mousse cake.

Owner Marc Griffiths said: “Hidden away in the centre of town and overlooking the harbour, you’ll find yourself a 1960s pub – a great example of Brutalist architecture, with a 21st-century twist on the interior.
“The Colosseum has become somewhat of a forgotten destination over the past few years, despite being so centrally located and such an iconic building.”
He added: “The vision was clear from day one: keep the iconic, brutalist aesthetic, but make it a place for all to enjoy.
“Whether you want a cool, crisp pint after work, a round of premium cocktails late at night, or a selection of Mediterranean-inspired small plates to pick and share – we’ve got you covered.”
