SubCulture opens at Kongs

By Helen Salter  Monday Sep 11, 2017

The new residents at Kongs on King Street have big boots to fill, following the success of former occupants Burger Theory – now residing in their own restaurant down the road.

SubCulture subs are a brand new pop-up specialising in big subs. These are nine-inch toasted sandwiches, loaded with hefty portions of fillings and paired with a range of hearty sides and beer-battered black pepper fries.

Subs on the menu feature classic meaty toppings such as fennel salami, beef meatballs, Philly cheese steak and salt beef, alongside original creations such as their ‘TFC’: Thai fried chicken, with crunchy and spicy salad, mango and papaya salsa, lime & coconut cream and peanuts, all for £8.50.

A delicious veggie alternative to your standard ploughman’s, the Sub Beets (£7.50) came loaded with chunky beetroot relish, sliced beetroot, griddled halloumi, feta, rocket and horseradish mayo.

The light bread gave way to a huge amount of filling, generously served with a side of their addictive crack fries and slaw. Substituting the creamy slaw for the Zest Slaw, the shredded root veg, lime and mint dressing packed a serious punch. The fries were served hot and seasoned well.

Skinny subs are also available, with any choice of sandwich filling served without the bread and fries. The two vegetarian options can also be made vegan.

An impressive range of meat and veggie sides can also be ordered to bulk up the meal even more.

Pulled pork (£4.50), pickled hot peppers chillies (£2.00), dirty fries with slow cooked pork (£5.50) and deep fried mac & cheese balls (£4.50) are just a few of the sides on the menu.

All of the monster subs are made in house, from scratch and to order, with help from local suppliers Buxton’s Butchers, Joe’s Bakery and The French Garden at Bristol Fruit Market.
