Two of Bristol’s newest restaurants both named in UK’s top-100

By Martin Booth  Thursday Jan 19, 2023

They may have only been open for a combined total of five months, but two new Bristol restaurants have both been named among the UK’s 100 best.

Casa and COR join Paco Tapas, Wilsons and Bulrush in Square Meal’s Top 100 Restaurant Awards 2023 voted for by diners.

Square Meal say that the annual list is “a chance for us to shout about the best-of-the-best in both emerging and established culinary roles and allows us to celebrate the incredible chefs and hospitality teams out there going above and beyond to give their diners top-class experiences”.

The five Bristol restaurants in the top-100 are Paco Tapas and its sister restaurant Casa in Redcliffe in eighth and 29th places, Wilsons in Redland at 64, COR in Bedminster at 69 and Bulrush in Cotham in 77th place.

Casa at The General overlooking Bathurst Basin has been opened by the team behind the Michelin-starred Casamia which was formerly on the same site, as well as its neighbouring Paco Tapas, which has a Michelin star.

“Casamia was always going to be a tough act to follow, but Peter Sanchez-Iglesias and Joel Breakwell have done just that, reinventing Italian food with confidence, energy and style,” says Square Meal’s citation.

Wilsons on Chandos Road was recently named as the only Bristol entry in Harden’s Best UK Restaurants, while Bulrush is now one of only two city restaurants with a Michelin star following the closure of Casamia and Wilks.

COR, meanwhile, was opened on North Street in October 2022 by the former exec head chef of Bravas, Gambas and Cargo Cantina.

“After only 3 months of opening, Karen, myself and the COR family could not be happier about our inclusion into Square Meals top 100 UK restaurants,” COR co-owner Mark Chapman wrote on Instagram.

“We are on cloud 9. It’s great to see what we have achieved as a team in such a short period of time and to be included alongside some of the UK’s best restaurants. Very proud of the COR family.”
