White’s Botanicals – cafe review
Idly contemplating St Nicholas Street come to life while cradling the first coffee of the day, it is hard to believe the majestic Stock Exchange Building was once a frenzied hub of trade.
Calm, light and rustic inside, adorned with the foliage that gives the cafe its name, White’s Botanicals is causing a stir in Bristol’s old city for rather different reasons these days.
Recently opened in the historic venue that was last home to the Stock Exchange Bakery, this latest St Nicholas Street enterprise prides itself on offering a wholesome, nourishing food selection, with plenty of vegan-friendly options.
is needed now More than ever
The cafe exudes an aura of wholesomeness – from the cheery morning greeting, to the spread of granola and fruit laid out in the centre of the room.
Despite the delectable-looking ‘make your own granola’ option laid out in front of me, I opted for a dish of poached eggs, with smashed avocado, black bean spicy salsa and kale on granary sourdough toast for £5.95.
The breakfast was a delight, with perfectly cooked eggs, complemented by a generous portion of avocado and the fresh salsa bringing it to life with more than a hint of spice.
The accompanying large cup of coffee was smooth and strong, and a secondary small jug of milk was offered before I even had chance to request it.
The cafe’s namesake, White, is a man who left a lasting legacy in the city, while the Botanicals part refers to the plants that add to the venue’s aura of calm. Links to the florist next door add to a friendly, community feel of the place.
Food options range from sourdough toasties to buckwheat pancakes, all priced at £4.95, all-day breakfast dishes, or meze platters for £7.50. Although quiet soon after 8am, the cafe is already attracting a regular passing trade judging by the commuters popping in for their takeaway coffee.
If every day could start this way, it would truly be a joy.
