Brewery near Bristol creates hot cross bun inspired beer

By Martin Booth  Monday Apr 4, 2022

One a penny, two a penny, hot cross buns – and now hot cross bun beer.

With raisins, mixed citrus peel, cinnamon, all spice, vanilla and nutmeg, One a Penny beer has all the flavours of the Easter treat but in beer form.

The newest brew from Wild Beer is like a New England IPA but without the hops, with sweetness from the vanilla, a fruitiness from the raisins and citrus peel, and a hint of complimentary spice.

Wild Beer co-founder Andrew Cooper said: “At the Wild Beer Co. we love to get creative with our flavour combinations and produce beers that pair harmoniously with and are inspired by food.

“Experimentation is a major part of what we do and after ten years of brewing we love to keep things fresh, so when we had the idea to create a brew for Easter we couldn’t resist making a beer version of the much loved hot cross bun.

“Tasting over 15 different kinds of hot cross buns (hey, someone’s gotta do it) to understand the bready, sweet flavour we’ve landed with One A Penny, a pale, smooth, full-bodied beer with hints of sweetness blended with complex spices that pairs perfectly with the Easter treat.”
