Wilks gains Michelin star

By Martin Booth  Thursday Oct 2, 2014

Wilks restaurant on Chandos Road in Redland is now the proud holder of a Michelin star, despite only being open for just over a year.

The accolade brings to three the number of starred restaurants in the Bristol area, as Wilks joins Casamia in Westbury-on-Trym and the Pony & Trap in Chew Magna which have both retained their own stars, offering what the anonymous Michelin inspectors define as “very good cooking in its category”.

Wilks chef and owner James Wilkins (above, with co-owner and manager Christine Vayssade) told Bristol Culture that the phone “hasn’t stopped ringing” since news of the award was made yesterday morning.

“I’m so happy but it really hasn’t had time to sink in yet,” 35-year-old Wilkins said on a brief break from the kitchen at what the latest edition of the Michelin guide calls “an unpretentious neighbourhood restaurant”.

There are 15 new entries in the one star category this year, but only four in England outside of London.

Three restaurants with Michelin stars now makes Bristol only one behind Birmingham and also the village of Bray in Berkshire, which contains two of the four three-Michelin-starred restaurants in the UK.
