Wine could soon be made in new vineyard on outskirts of Bristol

By Martin Booth  Thursday Oct 7, 2021

Winemakers who currently grow their grapes in Somerset are hoping to buy a small field on the outskirts of Bristol to create “a real showpiece for sustainable viticulture”.

Dunleavy Vineyards were first planted by owner and manager Ingrid Bates in 2008, and has since become one of the UK’s leading wine producers.

They are now crowdfunding to raise £55,000 to buy the field, which will enable them to grow more grapes that will go into their bottles of still rose, sparkling white and sparkling red wine.

Ingrid, who lives in Bishopston, sells her wine through independent shops and some of the UK’s top restaurants across the country.

The crowdfunder will enable Dunleavy to grow more grapes without chemicals and help them meet the growing demand for their wine.

“The plan is to buy a small field, very close to the city of Bristol to give our business a long term base where it’s easier for people to engage with our vine growing,” she said.

“It’ll be a real showpiece for sustainable viticulture. We love trying new things and want to grow exciting, new and untested grape varieties without the use of chemicals.

“I love wildlife and have a background biology. I want our vineyard to be a real haven for nature in all its forms. Our small, leased plot has given us a great start but there’s so much more we’d like to do.”

Rewards for people donating to the crowdfunder include vine adoption, vineyard tours and tastings, as well as an invitation to an evening of beer and wine tasting with Wiper & True and Left Handed Giant.

There is also even your chance to get your own face or your pet on the label of a bottle of Dunleavy’s wine.
