Easter wonder from Bedminster chocolatier

By Dulcie Horn  Wednesday Apr 1, 2015

Zara Narracott has always had a passion for chocolate and now makes her living from making it, with her latest creation a scale model of the ss Great Britain which will be on display at this weekend’s Taste Chocolate festival.

“I’ve always been a complete chocoholic since I was little, just completely obsessed really. In my school yearbooks I was voted as the person most likely to become Willy Wonka!”

Zara decided to take this passion to the next level and took an online course when she was 22, learning the basics and receiving feedback and advice on her recipes.

Since then she’s been getting fully immersed in all things chocolate. She’s been running her business, Zara’s Chocolates, nearly five years now; selling at local fairs, running workshops, hosting tasting parties and she was even displayed at the Chocolate! exhibition at the M Shed in 2013.

A chance encounter at the Tobacco Factory Market with Xanthe Ivory of Ivory Flowers in late 2013 lead them to open a shop together on North Street in Bedminster, which she says has been the highlight of her career so far.

Their shop offers an incredible sensory experience to all visitors with an aroma of flowers and chocolates greeting you at the door.

Beautiful floral displays are placed next to chocolate tasters in teacups and Zara’s working kitchen takes pride of place at the back of the shop.

Recently Zara’s been busy inventing for Easter and has a whole range of little chicks and bunnies which are filled with tiny golden eggs as well as large speciality eggs including one that sports a large white chocolate moustache.

With all this time living and breathing chocolate, does she ever get sick of it?

“No! I guess that’s what keeps me making new flavours and coming up with new ideas. I don’t really have a day where I don’t eat chocolate. But I guess I don’t gorge on it as much as I used to!”
