A-Z Bristol Pub Crawl: Alpha Bottle Shop & Tap, Bedminster

By Rachel Sutherland  Friday Mar 10, 2023

The hushed atmosphere inside Alpha Bottle Shop & Tap differs from the usual setting Bristol24/7 encounters on our everlasting A-Z Bristol pub crawl.

The beer shop, nestled inside East Street‘s Imperial Arcade, gives off more of a chilled cafe vibe – a cafe which serves beer and cider on tap that is.

Conversations stayed at a low volume inside on a Tuesday evening as craft beer lovers, spoilt for choice with beverages from Bristol and beyond, sat together in the snug setting.

The xx’s songs and other downtempo tunes played out inside Bedminster‘s independent beer haven – which is dotted with fairy lights, tea lights and indoor plants.

Two-thirds of a pint of Magazine Cover from Cheltenham brewery Deya, a pale ale on tap (£4.20), went down a treat as more people arrived through its doors at around 6pm.

The name of the shop, coined by co-owners Emily and Mike, has three different meanings.

As its their first business together, the word Alpha marks the beginning of their journey, it also gives a nod to Alpha Acids, which are used to measure beer hops and its wolf logo refers to an alpha wolf and as the owners put it symbolises “the leader of the pack and the determination to be the best we can be”.

The colourful fridges inside Alpha, which has been open for nearly two years, are divided up into categories ‘pale/lager’, ‘IPA/DIPA’, ‘stout/sour’ and ‘cider/AF/soft’ – making its array of beverages easy to navigate.

But the shop isn’t just limited to beer and cider, with organic wines by the glass or bottle, local spirits and even merch all on offer.

The combination of its comfortable, relaxed and welcoming atmosphere and its abundance of beer  leaves you thirsty for more.
