A-Z Bristol Pub Crawl: Kongs, King Street

By Mia Vines Booth  Thursday Nov 24, 2022

It was a Wednesday night when a group of young professionals decided to change up their usual cosy pub trip to somewhere a little more buzzing.

The group fancied a night of pub games, a lively atmosphere and reasonably priced pints in the heart of the city centre, and Kongs on King Street ticked all the boxes.

They excitedly made their way to this friendly establishment in the buzzing city centre.

For those less well acquainted, King Street is the beating heart of the city’s drinking scene, a long cobbled road by the harbour with around a dozen lively watering holes. While crowded and lively on the weekend, Kongs was more quiet on this mid-week occasion.

The original vintage PAC-man stands proud

Kongs sits opposite Bristol Old Vic, its exterior looking rather subdued in comparison to the Old Vic’s bright lights and contemporary design. But what Kongs lost on the outside, it made up for on the inside.

Kongs is one of those huge bars that seems to offer everything. The mammoth beer selection contained a selection of Bristol favourites like Lost and Grounded, Good Chemistry and Newton Park, as well as the classic big brands.

Although the group had arrived before the real party started, the neon flashing lights emanating from the walls and arcade games suggested Kongs was raring to go.

The bar made the group feel like students again. Cheap deals on drinks, a built-in DJ booth and games like ping pong and table tennis made the friends reminisce about times when tequila shots and beer pong were the norm for a Wednesday evening.

The vintage arcade games quickly distracted them however, with PAC-Man proving the most popular among a group which also included Street Fighter II and Donkey Kong.

Alongside the entertainment, Kongs recently welcomed Ritual Kitchen as its newest pop-up, with Saul Chacon – born and raised in Mexico City – cooking up authentic Mexican food.

Despite the allure of delicious Mexican food and a host of games, the group decided that the rest of King Street was calling.

They finished up their beers to head a few metres down the cobbled road to their next stop, unanimously agreeing that they would return on a weekend when big celebrations were in order.
