A-Z Bristol Pub Crawl: Mickey Zoggs, St Paul’s

By Mia Vines Booth  Friday Mar 3, 2023

On a weekday evening a young couple stepped inside Mickey Zogg’s.

They were no strangers to this unassuming waterhole, having come many times before to enjoy resident DJs play, catch up with friends, and conspicuously read music magazines in the corner over an ice cold IPA.

For here was the spiritual home of Noods, a radio station broadcasting daily shows “from the misfits, dancers, collectors and selectors that make up our community” with no playlists and no adverts.

Situated midway between Brunswick Square and Portland Square in St Paul’s, the space was once the home of the Surrey Vaults pub, before Noods moved in permanently in 2021, setting up a bar, cafe and studio space.

The bar serves Italian coffee, cocktails and Mickey Zogg’s own IPA

It’s a friendly place that Bristol’s DJs and musicians like to call their home and has seen the likes of Yushh, Bruce, K-Means and I-Sha all showing face at this trendy spot.

With connections to the local music scene, Mickey Zogg’s has become a welcoming lift-off space for aspiring DJs, musicians and music promoters to launch their careers.

They’ve supported the likes of local music production community, Saffron Records, and hosted music events, markets, fundraisers and more.

The couple enjoyed Mickey Zogg’s IPA, and mulled over whether to indulge in another of the pub’s branded delights, a pickled egg, before deciding against it.

They did come away with a pair of sunglasses however, after ambivalently downing a shot of semi-decent tequila, a deal that many aspiring DJs have no doubt enjoyed.

After playing a game of backgammon, and earwigging on the ever-present music chatter that pervades Mickey Zogg’s, the couple left satisfied.

They would be back next week to listen to their friend play in the Noods studio, joining others who love this pub’s fusion of music, community, and good food and drinks.
