A-Z Bristol Pub Crawl: Quinton House, Clifton

By Betty Woolerton  Friday Jun 30, 2023

Away from the whir of cars, Quinton House was busy inside and out on a recent Thursday evening.

The triangular patch of grass opposite the boozer, a communal garden dating back to the early 19th century, was transformed into a lush, if slightly precarious, beer garden.

Some punters perched on a mismatched array of furniture while others opted to sit down on the green and balanced pints on knees and books, taking care to avoid the strewn Rizla packets and bottle caps.

While their view did feature a small slither Queens Road to the north east, the site had a European, square-like feel as it was mostly enclosed by grand Georgian terraces.

The makeshift beer garden was filled with sun-seeking drinkers

Inside, the Quinton’s charm extended. Decoration-wise, the highlight was a quaint-looking painting of the pub hung on the wall, complete with hanging flower baskets, red brick exterior and signage.

The L-shaped drinking space wrapped around the single bar and seemed one of the city’s cosiest pubs with just a dozen or so seats.

There was plenty of room for jovial chatter, however, with the largest table at the back of the boozer completely taken up by what looked like students, as well as a trio solitary drinkers by the window.

“You’re wife’s expecting, isn’t she?” Asked one of them.

With a nervous smile, the younger man replied: “Yeah, she’s getting pretty big and I’m shitting myself to be honest.”

On the hand pulls that night were local brews Underfall Lager and Ashton Press Cider from Butcombe Brewery, alongside a selection of more ubiquitous lagers.

An illustration of the Quinton was in pride of place on the wall

The Quinton’s history as a watering hole dates back to the turn of the 1900s, and, under the management of landlord Patrick Gomm, it has managed to retain much of its traditional, historic feel and today remains a friendly place for students and locals alike.
