A-Z Bristol pub crawl: Snuffy Jack’s, Fishponds
It was barely 16 degrees but at one pub in Fishponds on a recent Thursday evening, but it could have been the height of a Mediterranean summer.
Birkenstocks kicked off and shorts slipped into, punters in the beer garden of Snuffy Jack’s were settled in for long haul as they nursed their pints in the welcome sunshine.
Ordering what could be the cheapest cans of Clear Head from Bristol Beer Factory served in Bristol (£3), two thirsty cyclists relaxed into the surroundings.
is needed now More than ever
A few of dozen or so punters were curled up in iron-twisted chairs. Thought-out and neat, the beer garden felt slightly like a back garden – but one where they have had a crack at DIY landscaping with some timber they found at B&Q.
The space was completely enclosed, giving it an intimate, no-frills vibe. Just don’t peek through the cracks and look out to the carpark and bins.

Snuffy Jack’s is located in a former stationers opposite Fishponds Park
Enthusiastic conversations between tables was distraction enough from a faint rush of noise emanating from Fishponds Road.
“A squeeze of whole lime and a generous pinch of salt really hydrates you. I promise you mate, washed down with a glass of water,” promised one drinker to his friend.
It must have been a convincing hypothesis, as the pair quickly went to go and buy more pints.
Sticking to an alcohol free beverage to eliminate all chances of being hungover, the two cyclists ventured inside to order another drink.

The pub was steadily filling up with a mixture of young and old that evening
The chilled-out merriment continued with several tables occupied by friends inside the micropub.
Snuffy Jack’s offers up to six real ales straight from the cask, two keg lines and a rotation of traditional ciders, wines and a selection of gins.
Among the beers on this particular visit were Yeovil Ale’s Somerset, Great Western Brewing’s Old Higby, On Point’s Crusher Impala and Twisted Brewing Co’s Guacho.
Coming back out for a wander through the garden, one group was talking about their school friend who used to play football with them and is now an undertaker.
Close by, a couple sat at one of the wooden tables in the shade, sipping leisure pints as their toddler played with crayons.
As the sun’s glare held fast and more pints were drunk, a man in the garden’s corner with a sun kissed face nodded off.
Could this be the first sign that Bristol’s long-awaited summer has arrived?
