A-Z Bristol pub crawl: The Avonmouth Tavern, Avonmouth
“Why don’t you come and sit by us, love?” called a pair of punters sat on a table.
It was a warm welcome on a recent Thursday afternoon as a corner-side pub gradually began to come alive with people.
The first stop on another iteration of Bristol24/7 A-Z’s never-ending pub crawl took us by train to the Avonmouth Tavern – a sizable watering hole where everybody seemed to know one another.

That day Bristol’s heatwave was in full force but it takes more than 35 degrees temperatures to keep people in Avonmouth away from the opportunity to enjoy a post-work bevvy.
Two pints of Stella were gladly received that afternoon
As the sun glared in BS11, the lilting sounds of ABBA emanated from a speaker and drifted outside to a stretch of wooden benches marked by blue Foster umbrellas.
Beneath them several clusters of drinkers cowered, soaking up the summer shadows over some leisurely post-work pints.
Inside, this pub was so deceptively large that people could play pool, occupy the function room or drink by the bar while remaining oblivious to each other.
The pub was smart and marked by a rather new-looking pool table which lay empty whilst punters drifted in and outside.
Staff behind the bar cheerfully pulled pints of cider and beer as more people bustled inside in search of something to quench their thirsts.
One man on his own, Newcastle Brown Ale in hand, introduced himself to Bristol24/7 and before long told us of his journey from Lancashire to Bristol – involving a divorce, career change and a spell in prison.
Coming out for a wander through the pub garden for some grassy relief, a trio of young punters played on some swings whilst their parents smiled on with a pint and some crisps.
At 7pm, we called it a day and began heading back to the train station – much to the chagrin of the duo of drinkers still inside who winked as we left.
