A-Z Bristol pub crawl: The Famous Royal Navy Volunteer, King Street

By Martin Booth  Friday Dec 3, 2021

“A third of 14, a third of 19 and a third of 22 please.”

That was the order of one customer of the bar at the Royal Navy Volunteer on a recent Thursday night.

(Although for the purposes of this alphabetically-ordered feature, this King Street pub is called the Famous Royal Navy Volunteer.)

The number 14 is Blackberry Mango Coconut Dreamcake, a 9% pastry sour from Edinburgh’s Vault City.

It’s a brilliantly bonkers beer and one that quite possibly could only ever be seen on tap here or at Small Bar just over the road.

Underneath this beer on the current list is Cinder Toffee from New Bristol Brewery in St Paul’s, described as a Crunchie Bar stout.

The names alone of some of the other brews could be from some earnest sixth fork poetry, including Respect My Personal Space, Misaligned Moods and Remember the Future.

On December 9, almost every single beer here – 21 to be exact – will be from St Werburgh’s brewery Wiper & True as they continue their tradition of an annual Christmas tap takeover.

It will come ahead of a busy 2022 for Wiper & True, who are planning to open a new brewery and brewpub at the City Business Park in Lawrence Hill.

Soon after 8pm on Thursday, it was standing room only at the Royal Navy Volunteer – sorry, the Famous Royal Navy Volunteer, or just the Volley.

Now the sister pub of the Butcher’s Hook in Thornbury and the Strand in Cheltenham, the building occupied by the Volley dates back to 1670.

Look out for live music and regular comedy gigs here, as well as popular Sunday roasts.

How has it become famous? Perhaps in the same way that Great Britain became great? Just add something in front of your name and the sobriquet sticks.
