A-Z Bristol pub crawl: The George & Dragon, Redfield

By Ellie Pipe  Friday Oct 14, 2022

There’s one punter who’s stealing the show inside the George & Dragon in Redfield on a chilly Saturday evening.

The pint-sized puppy is only too happy to lap up the attention as staff and customers briefly pause to play on their way past the wood-panelled bar.

Recently reopened under new ownership, the long-standing pub on Church Road has had a makeover and tealight candles on each wooden table cast a soft light against the bare brick and blue walls.

Now owned by the Guerrilla Pub Company – the team behind a number of Bristol pubs, including the Farm in St Werburgh’s, the Cadbury in Montpelier and the Stag & Hounds in Old Market – the George & Dragon boasts a newly restocked bar of local brews that include Moor Beer and Broadoak Cider.

A smiling face behind the bar is only too happy to dish out the odd taster before efficiently pouring out a pint of Broadoak, along with an alcohol-free Punk IPA, bag of scampi fries and a mystery shot from an intriguing-looking box in the corner.

“It’s really nice,” assures the friendly bartender, handing over the shot of Tuaca.

“Are you keeping the name?” asks one punter, intrigued as the pub’s newly painted exterior is yet to include a name.

The manager confirms that there are no plans to officially change the name although they are referring to it as ‘the Dragon’ more than its full title (which is catchier but does work less well in fulfilling the criteria of being Bristol24/7’s A-Z pub crawl ‘G’ pub).

Near the bar, a couple enjoy a quiet drink while at the far end of the pub, a game of pool is in full swing and the table-full of people with the ever-enthusiastic puppy sit in the centre, letting their mini companion make friends while they get stuck into Saturday night drinks.

Overhead, music is on a 90s roll as Ocean Colour Scene shifts into Blur’s Country House. The pub is also hosting regular live music Sunday sessions, as well as the sport for which it has long been a draw.

As one couple move in for a game of pool, the door opens and a fresh wave of punters come in out of the cold. Each stop in turn to pet the puppy, who couldn’t be happier with its newly renovated Saturday night haunt.
