A-Z Bristol pub crawl: The Good Measure, Redland
‘Tis the season for festivities, as demonstrated by the singing barman framed by fairly lights behind the bar at the Good Measure on a recent evening, pouring samples for a well-dressed gentleman.
The cheery verse is backed by slurps of noodles in bowls laden with broth from a trio in the centre of the room. Their bucket hats and long sleeves almost end up as part of the meal.
Peering inside The Good Measure on Chandos Road in Redland, a passer-by might notice the colourful can-filled fridge with a rather neglected looking spider plant sitting on top, or a display of beer pumps past.

On this recent evening, the barman recounts the tale of how he ended up in the hospitality trade to a couple drinking at the bar, which involved falling down a waterfall in Colombia, among other adventures.
There are 12 beers on tap here and a host more in the fridge, with St Philip’s brewery Good Chemistry unsurprisingly responsible for many of these – it is their pub after all, which in 2020 was named runner-up in Bristol & District CAMRA’s pub of the year.
The range of beer is surpassed only by the range of bar snacks. Dinner-worthy food is provided by Mr Noodle on Thursdays and Dead Wingers over the weekend, with a popular pub quiz every Monday.
On a road certainly not short of places to eat and drink, The Good Measure is small but perfectly formed and not to be missed.
