A-Z Bristol pub crawl: The Jersey Lily, Whiteladies Road

By Rachel Sutherland  Thursday Nov 17, 2022

The rain hammered down on Whiteladies Road as two men huddled under the canopy of the Jersey Lily, both with a pint in hand.

There was a very homely feeling which came with ducking out of the pouring rain and stepping into this cosy pub.

I’m not sure what it was that hit me first, the warmth or the super chilled ambience. It had just gone 5pm on a dark Wednesday evening and the chatter of men exchanging stories remained at a low level.

Bopping away to the easy listening tunes that filled the gaps of silence, a bartender merrily poured my half of Heineken (£2.75) using a glass which had been nicely chilled in the fridge.

A number of eyes were glued to the screens inside showing a friendly football match between Turkey and Scotland, as fairy lights wrapped around a column and on the walls giving the place an extra bit of charm.

Everyone seemed to be content and relaxed, and the feeling was certainly contagious.

I settled down on a comfy, red sofa next to a framed photograph of staff at the Star Pub Awards, when the Jersey Lily was crowned the south’s best cask pub in 2017.

Next to that, a black a white photograph of Lily Langtry hung – a Jersey-born Victorian actress and racehorse breeder, the woman who the pub is named after.

The less common noise of coins hitting the bar rang through the pub as a man with white hair emptied the contents of his wallet to pay for a pint.

The real ale pub proudly offers £3 pints of all ales on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.

Every now and then the cheery voice of the bartender offering up advice to customers on drinks and other nearby pubs, could be heard over the murmur of low chatter.

As time went on, more sodden people clambered through its doors, smiling faces lit up by the glow of the fairy lights.

I could have quite easy let the hours slip away soaking up the atmosphere and sheltering from the rain outside.
