Pubs and Bars / A-Z Bristol pub crawl

A-Z Bristol pub crawl, The Kings Head, Whitehall

By Ellie Pipe  Friday Feb 18, 2022

The landlord of The Kings Head perches at one of the tables and awaits the verdict on a sample from the kitchen.

“I’m trying to perfect it at the moment,” he says of the scotch bonnet condiment, before turning to greet incoming customers with a smile.

It’s a Saturday evening and the pub on Whitehall Road is busy with locals, many of whom are glued to the big screens where Norwich are playing Man City, while others talk over drinks and steaming plates of food.

A proudly family-run local, The Kings Head offers something for everyone with a menu that includes the likes of hearty Sunday roasts and Caribbean dishes, with daily specials hand-written on a chalk board by the bar.

Staff behind the bar cheerfully pull pints of cider and beer as yet more people bustle past looking for the function room. This is where the party really is on this particular evening and music can be heard from behind the closed door as a crowd spanning all generations join in celebration.

“Oh, they went to the wrong Kings Head,” says one woman, heading away from the music with a phone to her ear as she starts to issue directions to the Whitehall local.

The tantalising scent wafting from the kitchen doesn’t disappoint as vast plates of Caribbean vegetable curry and a cod loin special are brought to a table at the top of the pub.

Caribbean vegetable curry and a cod special at The Kings Head don’t disappoint

Back at the bar, a sign promotes The Kings Head rum punch. Produced from behind the bar in unlabelled plastic bottles, the sweet fruit flavours overlie a drink that packs quite a punch.

As a couple prepare to head out into the rainy night, the landlord shouts a friendly goodbye from the depths of a pub that has something for everyone.
