A-Z Bristol Pub Crawl: The Masons Arms, Stapleton

By Mia Vines Booth  Friday Dec 9, 2022

It’s not often you find a pub with pets. But when you do, they are often excellent characters.

At the Masons Arms in Stapleton, two ladies were intrigued to find not one English bulldog but two.

Staggering with the weight of their bulking bodies, the two bulldogs gave the girls a quick sniff, and decided to allow them entry into this little establishment on a wintery Wednesday evening.

The suburban pub sits on a main road opposite a Londis service station, but you wouldn’t know this once you enter.

With festive fairy lights, football flags and characterful trinkets, the ladies’ chilly cockles were quickly warmed.

The bar had a healthy mix of local favourites and pub classics. They opted for standard lagers at £4.25 each and took themselves for a wander.

There seemed to be surprises around every corner, from a cage which contained the landlord’s African Grey Parrot, to a “secret” garden overlooking the Frome valley, and an even more secret separate bar room in the back, with a TV and darts area.

On the second Monday of every month, this cosy watering hole has a charity quiz night, and they even do a curry on the same day, as well as their well-known hot baguettes on a Sunday evening.

Their food menu is small but satisfying, with chunky chips and classic burgers to line stomachs full of beer, best for those that come here to watch the football in marathon stints.

It was a merry evening for the girls, who met gentlemanly fellows and exchanged details of their lives, each with a story to share and a friendly smile.

The girls endeavoured to return on a summer’s day to catch the view of the Frome valley in all its glory, which they were assured would deliver.
