A-Z Bristol Pub Crawl: The Pegasus, Southmead

By Mia Vines Booth  Friday Jun 23, 2023

Two punters made the journey to the Pegasus in Southmead from central Bristol by bus on a summer’s afternoon.

They hoped they could use the pool table, but it seemed to be in high demand that evening.

The Pegasus, or “Peggy”, as it is known to regulars, is set back from a crescent of shops and houses, lined with beds of meadow flowers and sturdy wooden benches.

Bonus ball sheets are evidently in high demand at the Pegasus

The smell of batter frying in oil wafts from a nearby fish and chip shop as the evening sun casts shadows on the uneven concrete.

The pub has been a hub for locals for as long as they can remember. At first glance, it’s a sparse setting, with linoleum floors, pothole painted walls and a concrete patio outside.

But momentos to the locals are everywhere, and a big group of family and friends cackles from a table laden with pints, soft drinks and open crisp packets.

One punter, Vinny, sits at the bar next to a photo of Cliff Richard. “I’m the biggest Sir Cliff fan you’ll ever meet,” he told the punters proudly.

Above Cliff is another photo of Elvis Presley.

“My wife on the other hand prefers Elvis,” Vinny said. “She’s all about the sideburns, you see.”

Vinny and his wife may have been bought together by their love for rock and roll

In between the two photos, a sketch is drawn on the wall, with the letters ‘e heart c’, perhaps an ode to the married couple’s love for their rock heroes, or to their own love story.

Behind the bar is the bubbly Kizzy, who keeps the regularals’ pints topped up and entertains their ever-witty opinions.

Staff and customers raised over £600 for the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Southmead hospital in March last year.

It’s a monumental effort for one of the most deprived areas of Bristol, during an ongoing cost of living crisis, and a marker of the establishment’s enduring community spirit.
