A-Z Bristol Pub Crawl: The Shield & Dagger, Whitchurch
A man puts headphones on as he opens up his laptop in front of him, finishing off some work at the end of the day.
But he is very much an anomaly in this lively south Bristol pub, where around him laughter and chatter fills the room.
The Shield & Dagger, which first opened in the 1960s, has been given a fresh lick of paint in recent years and had its outdoor area done up.
is needed now More than ever
But that probably made no odds to the pub’s loyal locals, who on a recent Tuesday evening are mostly older people and workmen at the end of their shift.

The pub, on East Dundry Road in Whitchurch, is clearly popular, with the worn furniture demonstrating that well.
A single barmaid dashes between the bar area – where a group of men are playing pool – and the lounge, which is steadily filling up.
The Bristolian accent can be heard loud and clear, as the locals drink and chat over cricket playing in the background.
A man with a voice that carries says how on Saturday night, the pub was so rammed, he had to put his chair in a certain position to stop more people from coming in.
Out the window, there is a view up Dundry Hill and more workmen can be seen getting out of their vans to grab themselves a pint.
Inside, the pub’s decor includes old boxing photos while a large framed portrait of Henry VIII hangs proudly in the corner.
As the evening goes on, the man working on his laptop finally closes it and heads out, while more and more people stream in as the sun comes down.
