A-Z Bristol Pub Crawl: The Three Tuns, St George’s Road

By Hope Talbot  Thursday Jul 27, 2023

Just a short walk away from the thoroughfare of Park Street and the harbour sits the Three Tuns.

Hidden behind Brandon Hill and College Green, you could easily miss this special spot.

Yet, while unsuspecting, the pub has a certain charm which attracts a range of characters, as head barmaid Jade explained.

Sandwiched between a hotel and several residential buildings, the pub receives a variety of clientele.

Several businesses and offices also surround the venue, with plenty stopping along their way home.

While some are just occasional passers-by, others have come to make the Three Tuns their regular.

Drawings by young artists adorns the wall at this friendly boozer

This is best noted in much of the pub’s decor. Up on the bar, a wall of drawings by both child and adult visitors line the walls.

A particular favourite is a drawing of a sausage dog, its long body stretching across three different canvases.

Elsewhere, the pub leaves room for personality, with house rules printed on entry, and a mishmash of textured furnishings of all spaces and sizes.

On the bar, signs boast excellent selections of alcohol in colourful cursive fonts.

I find myself particularly drawn by their varieties of gin, and of course, the multiple ciders on tap (as all good Bristol pubs should have).

The Three Tuns in Hotwells is a great place for a friendly city centre pint

As the working day comes to an end, punters fresh from work head inside, making for a buzzing atmosphere.

The pub begins to fill and I’m pleasantly surprised by how many people greet me, either verbally or with a friendly head nod.

With the late afternoon sun peeling through clouds, workers sit and soak up the rays on a makeshift seating area on the pavement outside.

As more customers join, and sit beside one another, groups mingle and merge, with their original groupings quickly forgotten.

Suited workers chat happily with manual labourers still in uniform. Lighters are shared and jokes are cracked as punters lap up the sun.
