A-Z Bristol Pub Crawl: The Yeoman, Whitchurch

By Charlie Watts  Friday Feb 24, 2023

A group of tradesmen reward themselves with a pint after a hard day’s graft. An elderly man reads the paper while sipping from a glass of San Miguel. In the corner of the room, a 60-year-old is celebrating her birthday with a friend over a pitcher of Long Island Iced Tea.

The Yeoman is a typical boozer with the usual locals.

A Sizzling pub, the owners say it “puts the sizzle” in Whitchurch, but the only sizzle on a quiet Thursday afternoon is the distorted music playing from a speaker.

In the lounge, an older couple are enjoying a meal in silence while the atmosphere of the room is dominated by a man crunching on pork scratchings as he watches a weather report on the flat-screen TV.

A flat-screen, showing football highlights, is also the source of entertainment in the bar area. The pub on Wells Road also has a darts board and pool table, though the locals seem more interested in the betting machines.

As the afternoon turns into evening, the tradesmen become rowdier as they start their next round. The elderly man is now deep into completing a crossword, while the birthday girl is able to sneak a quick vape without being noticed.

On the wall are photos of Bristol from its past, which trigger an alcohol-fuelled conversation about how the majority of pirates hung came from from the city. “Hence the accent – arrr!”

The Yeoman is quiet, cozy and warm. With cheap drinks, food and funny conversations, it seems to be what the people of Whitchurch want for a bit of a reprieve.
