A-Z Bristol Pub Crawl: Upton Inn, Upton Cheyney

By Rachel Sutherland  Friday Feb 3, 2023

On the edge of the Cotswolds, nestled in between Bristol and Bath, The Upton Inn is everything you can expect from a traditional pub.

Exposed bricks and wooden beams make up the rustic interior which is full to the brim with locals on a Saturday evening.

‘Happy Birthday’ is sung across the room by a gleeful table of people all ages as staff dart from one end of the pub to another collecting glasses and keeping up with flowing drink orders.

In a humorous juxtaposition, a mounted shot gun on the wall sits alongside a barrel with a sign on top which welcomes people to help themselves to blankets.

The distant murmur of Footloose plays out but is hardly audible over the comforting hum of chatter.

With a stand near the bar dedicated to dog treats and bowls and a barrel outside with a dog bowl positioned beneath the tap, it is clear this pub caters not just for people, but for their four-legged friends too.

A message on its front door sets the tone for the laid-back vibe of the pub: ‘Please don’t remove muddy boots, we love them’.

Located on a country lane with rolling countryside nearby, it is a perfect stop off point to reward a long hike or a bike ride with a well deserved pint or some classic pub grub.
