A-Z Bristol Pub Crawl: New Bristol Brewery Taproom, St Paul’s

By Maddy Hansen  Friday Jun 9, 2023

Clear blue skies and 23-degree heat spell a busy evening for New Bristol Brewery Taproom.

Located down the quiet Wilson Street in St Paul’s, a neighbourbood with no remaining traditional pubs, it is clear the taproom attracts an enthusiastic crowd of beer fanatics.

Many had arrived on bikes, most surpisingly fresh-looking despiste the dusty heat and a mishmash of helmets and bycycle paraphenalia is building up by the door.

Among the male-heavy crowd, there’s no shortage of Carhartt, tattoos, beards and Birkenstocks, all soaking up the last of the dwindling sunshine.

A wooden beer barrel-cum-table hosts patrons punters a range of t-shirts from other local breweries such as Bristol Beer Factory and Left Handed Giant.

In true taproom style, beers are served in either two thirds, half or pint measures, with highlights from the menu being the Double Duvet Vous DIPA, being described as a “tropical fruit bomb with a pillowy mouthfeel”, or the Cinder Toffee Stout, described as “a liquified Crunchie bar in a stout”.

Aside from beer, the taproom also serves other locally sourced drinks, such as ‘Orange Wine handcrafted in Montpelier in a small urban vineyard’

This is a watering hole where arrangements for the weekend’s Bristol Craft Beer Festival on the harbour is a hot topic of conversation.

A man sitting alone waiting for a drinking partner strikes up conversation with two others that sit down next to him to share the table.

“We’re getting old now,” one says, chuckling. “That’s why we’re here in a craft beer place and not in Lakota.

“I’d be horrified to be in Lakota these days.”

Another replies: “It takes me a week to recover now. I’m 34”.

Elsewhere, carefully positioning themselves, friends take photos of each other on a film camera. “The film is Portra 400, it creates a nice sunset vibe,” one explains.
