Bar of the week: Wild Beer at Wapping Wharf

By Lowie Trevena  Thursday Aug 8, 2019

The sun is shining after a day of cloudy skies and non-stop showers. Maybe it’s the sun, or maybe it’s the welcoming atmosphere of Wild Beer Co at Wapping Wharf, but something makes a first-time visitor order two drinks at the bar.

Founded as a brewery in rural Somerset by two friends who met while working at Bristol Beer Factory, this was the second bar to be opened by Wild Beer and occupies a prime corner spot on Gaol Ferry Steps.

The bar is spacious and sleek, but still retains a homely atmosphere. Despite only celebrating its third birthday on Monday, it has already become a firm favourite for Bristol’s beer drinkers looking to always try something new.

Eclectic artwork makes for a talking point when ordering a drink at the bar

Ed, a supervisor here, is easy to chat to and incredibly knowledgeable. Leave your familiar favourites behind and let Ed and his knowledgeable team encourage you to step outside your comfort zone.

Wild Beer Co also brew spirits and looking at the handwritten menu on a blackboard, the first-time visitor decides that they must try a gin.

Sleeping Lemons was created in collaboration with Kingsdown’s own Phsychopomp and is inspired by the beer of the same name.

“The distilling process takes some of the saltiness out of the gin, so we put both a lemon slice and a sprig of samphire in to balance is all out,” says Ed, recommending pairing it with the Mediterranean tonic water.

It’s a perfect combination: both savoury and sweet, the flavours balance each other out without being overwhelming.

Taking the drinks to a table near the window makes for people-watching heaven. Wild Beer is a bar where two drinks just aren’t enough.
