Clifton bar to reopen with a new gin focus
A “hidden gem” located just outside the Clifton Arcade is due to reopen, after being forced to close as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.
Recently acquired by Bristol businessman Rhys Thickett, the Amoeba previously served cocktails, wines and spirits.
Upon its reopening in September 2020, the focus will be on gin, with Rhys saying: “I’m switching over from cocktails to gin and my plan is to source a bottle of every top prize-winning entry from this year’s World Gin Awards and to have them all available for customers to taste and enjoy.”

The bar, which is set across three floors and has a small garden, was bought by the businessman, who hopes that it can once again become a favourite with locals.

The Amoeba is located near the Clifton Arcade
“The Amoeba has become a Clifton institution over the past 18 years and I’m planning to carry this forward with a complete refurbishment and the creation of a new highly distinctive image which will definitely have the wow factor,” Rhys says.
“A lot of people, including himself, were saddened by the closure of this favourite ‘watering hole’ after so many years.
“It had become an integral part of the fabric of the community so I decided to take it on for a reopening in September and hopefully give it new lease of life for the next 18 years.”
