Pub of the Week: The Hope & Anchor

By Martin Booth  Thursday Feb 4, 2016

The Hope & Anchor is celebrating its first birthday under new owners this weekend with a beer festival featuring more than 20 beers from flood-affected regions of the UK, with 10p per pint going to flood charities.

But it’s not just this Jacob’s Wells Road pub – blessed with one of the best beer gardens in Bristol – that is celebrating until last orders on Sunday night.

The Hope is joining forces with its near neighbours the Eldon House and the Bag of Nails for the Brandon Beerfest, where more than 60 beers will be available in the three pubs and a number of special events taking place.

On a recent Wednesday evening, the finishing touches were being put to the descriptions of the beer that will be for sale at the Hope, which will also have live music, a roaming magician and until Saturday their kitchen takeover by The Feastie Boys.

At precisely 5pm, a pile of sausage rolls and sweet potato rolls were put on the bar as pub dog Treacle wandered in with his owner Pete, pub custodian and also owner of the Volunteer Tavern in Old Market. Talk at the bar, however, was of The Feastie Boys’ speciality: beef doughnuts.

Treats for Treacle and his smaller friend, landlord Colin’s dog Jasmine, are on one side of the bar, near a temporary bar erected just for this weekend’s beers.

Usually, there are some nine beers on keg, including options from Bristol Beer Factory and Wiper & True, and four in cask. Enjoy these and some of the 20 more on offer if you can in the garden out the back, multi-levelled, secluded, shaded by trees, a bucolic delight.

It’s going to be a fun weekend.
