Pub of the Week: Horts

By Lowie Trevena  Wednesday Sep 30, 2020

Autumn has truly arrived during a recent evening visit to Horts.

With mismatched leather seats to sink into, a myriad of tables to (safely) meet company at and the muffled sound of football playing on the TV, this city centre pub captures a picture of the changing seasons.

Ordering a rum and coke for myself and a half pint of Amstel for my friend, we relax into our surroundings.

With table service or ordering through an app, surfaces regularly sanitised and a reminder of the latest Government guidance for wearing a mask, talk briefly turns to the ongoing pandemic before, just as quickly, we tell ourselves to enjoy being able to relax in a welcoming ale house.

There are a range of ales on tap, the classics of Peroni, Estella and a range of Young’s, as well as a large selection of spirits.

A wide selection of drinks are available at this city centre pub

The highlight of the visit is the décor, a mix of local boozer-esque mismatched carpets and eclectic, “shabby chic” furnishings. On the main wall is a sprawling map of Bristol, and on every wall are black and white photos of a bygone era.

After finishing our first drink, and with nowhere to be on this rainy evening, we settle in for a second drink. As a range of faces come and go – one man who downs two pints of Guiness and leaves, two men watching the football, a group of mates sipping drinks while catching up – and we watch, relishing that, for now at least, we can enjoy an evening in a warm and welcoming pub like Horts.
