Pub of the Week: Quinton House
“Freezing something is like stopping time on your food,” a philosophical 20-something with designer stubble proclaimed at Quinton House on a recent evening.
A man who could have passed for Father Christmas on a day off sat on his own at the bar in a pink shirt and smiled.
Soon after 9pm, the philosopher and his friends left the pub to go and find some food and the decibel levels reduced by several notches.
is needed now More than ever
In the snug, a bespectacled regular gave an almost audible sigh of relief and got back to reading his book in peace; before right on queue a group of half a dozen university undergraduates walked in and the quiet was shattered.
“Have you ever had an ale before?” the most confident member of the group asked his friend who looked like he should still be at school. “No? Well, tonight is your lucky night.”
From a choice of Doom Bar, Tribute and London Pride, he chose Tribute from the St Austell Brewery in Cornwall. “I prefer lager,” the friend said after taking a small sip.
Next to the beers on cask were three different ciders from Thatchers, and in the shelves to one side of the bar a selection of wines and spirits.
Only a few hundred yards off the Clifton Triangle, Quinton House is probably best known for its award-winning floral displays.
It is located on Bristol’s former Catholic cathedral which now has the distinction of being the only cathedral in the UK to be turned into student accommodation, now known as Liberty Park – with large adverts outside in Cantonese appealing specifically to prospective Chinese residents.
Back inside the pub, one of the students constantly shuffled a pack of playing cards as the regular in the snug prepared a roll-up and walked outside.
