Pub of the Week: The George Inn
Conversation at a table in The George Inn deftly turns from Duran Duran to dog walking in the Cheddar Gorge as more drinks are ordered.
It’s late Sunday afternoon, going into early evening and it’s pouring down outside – in fact it’s been raining for what feels like eternity – and there’s nothing for it but to escape the weather and settle in for the long haul.
It may be just days away from the summer solstice but the wooden benches in the spacious garden lie abandoned and the comfy chairs by the unlit fireplace look like a far more appealing prospect.
is needed now More than ever
Despite the miserable weather, spirits inside the spacious roadside pub are high as families linger over after-lunch coffees and locals gather round tables and get the drinks orders in.
The Abbots Leigh local closed in January 2018 and was reopened following a successful bid by the community to get it back up and running.
The result is a welcoming space, with polished wooden floors and a mismatch of furniture, that offers something for everyone, as evidenced by the mix of generations joyfully whiling away their Sunday afternoon.
Pints and coffees are flowing from the bar in about equal measures and the friendly bar man doesn’t bat an eyelid at the order of two hot chocolates with a side of wasabi peas.
“Next time you come in, I’ll give you a free drink if you’ll try sprinkling peas on top,” he says with a grin some while later.
A corner seat is the perfect place to sit and soak up the atmosphere of the community pub. Historic photos are framed on one wall, while a poster by the door advertises the George Inn Cider Festival on Saturday, June 29, with a hog roast, pizzas, live music, a bouncy castle and more.
Pop in for a cider if you’re in the area then, you’ll be sure of a warm welcome – just keep your fingers crossed it doesn’t rain.
