Pub of the week: The Greenbank
Thank goodness for people power. If it wasn’t for the tenacity of Easton residents, 57 Belle Vue Road would now be houses.
But following a concerted local effort, the Greenbank pub was saved and now it has reopened with a more than moderate lick of paint, new improved beer garden and Toby Bywater from Zazu’s Kitchen at the helm.
Gone are the knife-slashed sofas of yore in this three-storey former Edwardian hotel, replaced with black leather banquette seating.
is needed now More than ever
The upstairs function room is available free for non-profit community groups, classes and activities. And the pub has already hosted live music from Lady Nade, with open mic nights coming soon.
The bar remains in the middle of the large downstairs main room, with four ales currently on tap: Old Smiler brewed less than a mile away by Easton’s own Towles, Wye Valley Butty Back, Zig Zag from the Milk Street Brewery of Frome, and Young’s IPA and London Stout.
Ciders are Orchard Pig Reveller and Stowford Press, with Charles Wells DNA, Kirin Ichiban from Japan and Estrella Damm from Spain the pick of the lagers, and eight wines available by the glass or bottle.
Rums are the choice of the spirits here, with Angostura from Trinidad an in-the-know new local’s favourite.
Coffee is also available from 9.30am each morning for early birds.
The pub has been open for less than a week, but already word is spreading about its pizzas, stone-baked using flour from Shipton Mill in the Cotswolds, and priced from a very reasonable £6.
Other options include toasted sandwiches, and bowls of stews and curries, as well as traditional pub grub such as homemade pork crackling and Scotch eggs.
Local suppliers are much in evidence, such as the Sweet Mart and East Bristol Bakery on St Mark’s Road and Tovey’s Seafood on Stapleton Road.
The dandelions on the food menu are a reminder of the involvement of Zazu’s Kitchen, who were thought to be opening a third restaurant before joining forces with James Savage of The Spotted Cow and Big Chill Bar and Bristol’s own media mogul Dougal Templeton to bring the Greenbank roaring back to life.
