Pub of the Week: The Hare on the Hill
As Donald Trump was making his way back from the failed summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un in Hanoi, a pub landlord in Kingsdown was mulling over the US president’s words.
On a recent Thursday evening, Ed Johnson was contemplating the logistics of a dot-matrix display that he wants to be able to show Trump’s tweets scrolling around the top of the backbar just beneath an antique bottle of sherry.
If it is made, the display will be just one of the elements in this pub that mixes the old with the new, chintzy items just on the right side of knowingly-ironic found alongside modern touches such as an all-glass door, with live music here every Sunday at 5pm featuring upcoming acts bringing fiddles, accordions and sea shanties.
is needed now More than ever
Ed – most recently found behind the bar at city centre pubs the Bag of Nails and Small Bar – has recently taken over the Hare on the Hill on the corner of Dove Street and Thomas Street North, a steep walk upwards from Stokes Croft.
The pub remains a proud freehouse although it’s also linked to the founders of Bath Ales – with Gem currently among the beers on cask.
Brewdog announced this week that from now on their bars across the country will always have at least two local beers on tap. At a pub like the Hare on the Hill, you can always be guaranteed to find far more than a couple of Bristol brews, with current selections from Good Chemistry, Lost & Grounded and Bristol Beer Factory.
If those fine selection of breweries doesn’t make you proud enough to call Bristol home, an original stencil by Banksy can be found protected by perspex on a wall just a few yards up Thomas Street North from the pub’s front door.
