Pub of the week: The Jersey Lily
Long overdue a revamp, the Jersey Lily on Blackboy Hill has been given a new lease of life by Wickwar, the Gloucestershire brewery who last year also gave a lick of paint to the Cotham Porter Stores a short pub crawl away.
Bob and Coopers were both on tap when I visited, alongside a special Jersey Lily Ale and a Golden XPA from the Caledonian Brewery in Edinburgh.
The only three ciders in somewhere whose sign proclaims is now an “ale and cider house” are Symonds, Strongbow Original and Scrumpy Jack.
is needed now More than ever
Farrow and Ball shades of grey are on the walls of this one-room pub named after a Victorian actress and racehorse breeder, with a snug at the back and a few tables and chairs outside overlooked by a large window which can be fully opened to let in the sunshine.
Food includes a “Bristol charcuterie board” featuring a selection of locally cured meat, while there are also three children’s dishes of pizza, sausage and mash, and macaroni cheese.
Pies from Pieminister can be added to with a pint for £2, as can the “all-day favourites” of pulled pork bap, halloumi bap and macaroni cheese.
Except that the all-day favourites are not served all day after the negative response to a request for food from a customer at 5pm on a Wednesday afternoon, who had to make do with a packet of crisps.
