Pub of the Week: The Robin Hood
‘You can never have too much of a Hood thing,’ says a handwritten sign on one wall of the Robin Hood pub towards the top of St Michael’s Hill.
Just a stone’s throw from St Michael’s Hospital, many a new dad has had a pint here while their partner remains with their baby due to strict visiting hour times in the maternity ward.
On a recent Thursday evening, a good number of people inside the pub were still wearing their University of Bristol lanyards as undergraduates mixed with staff and academics.
is needed now More than ever
Mondays here sees the weekly meeting of Bristol Drawing Club, Tuesdays are cask ale night with £3 for selected ales and Wednesday is quiz night.

One entire section of wall is dedicated to Moor pump clips but this evening there was no Moor on tap. Bristol beers still proliferated, however, with the likes of Arbor, Bristol Beer Factory and New Bristol Brewery among the ten keg and five cask options, with cans of Good Chemistry and bottles of Wild Beer in the fridge.
On another bit of wall, the Clifton Suspension Bridge has been painted as if in the middle of the countryside, with the requisite hot air balloons floating above it.
From a serving hatch painted to look like the Tardis comes food from new kitchen residents Le Boeuf & Lobster (previously at Bristol Spirit in Redfield), who have recently replaced popular Gujarati pop-up Naasto Baasto.
Le Boeuf & Lobster’s burgers range from £7.50 up to £12.50 for the ‘loaded lobster’ which features an 8oz beef patty from Ruby & White, lobster meat and Gruyère cheese sauce. Specials include lobster mac & cheese and a grilled whole lobster for £20, with stacked donuts for dessert.
With no time for a proper meal, a visitor nursing a pint of French Toast brown ale from New Bristol Brewery in St Paul’s ordered a packet of the only food behind the bar remaining; the barman apologetically charging £2 for a small bag of Snyder’s jalapeño pretzel pieces.
If it’s time to leave the Robin Hood, ‘don’t trust the milk clock,’ says another handwritten sign. At least it’s all downhill from here.
