Pub of the Week: The Star & Dove

By Lowie Trevena  Thursday Oct 22, 2020

Just a stone’s throw from the north east corner of Victoria Park is the Star & Dove.

On a recent Saturday afternoon, I check in on the NHS Covid-19 app, squidge some hand sanitiser from nearby sustainable store Bloop onto my hand and take a seat at a socially distanced table.

With three main rooms, the pub has been easily adapted to meet the coronavirus safety guidelines. Ordering a whisky and coke, my drinking partner ordering a pint of Amstel, it’s hard to believe it’s only 2pm when so many tables are filled.

A host of faces take a seat at the pub, which reopened following a £100,000 refurbishment at the end of 2019. From families, to dads and lads, and an older woman reading the paper over a glass of wine. It appears the Star & Dove has something to suit every person.

The décor is extravagant in its dark colours and quilted settees, but the mismatched chairs and cosy lighting make this Totterdown local warm and welcoming.

It’s easy to while away an autumn afternoon here, with day drinkers coming and go, a couple coming in for a cup of coffee, and a toddler running loose, tapping the keys on the piano at the rear of the room.

As the sun starts to set, we are suddenly aware that the evening is fast approaching. Finishing the final sips of our fourth drink each, we say our goodbyes to the staff and head into the looming evening, knowing we will return soon to while away the hours.
