Pub of the week: The Victoria Inn
Tucked away down a single-track lane and flanked by pastel-hued stone cottages, with wooden lintels of the sort that a couple on Escape to the Country would gleefully squeal over, the Victoria Inn stands smoothly symmetrical. A swinging portrait of the queen wearing a veiled crown hangs on a wrought iron stand above the leaded glass pane in the door marked BAR. The outside benches are unoccupied on a bitterly cold weekday lunchtime, but inside it’s warm and inviting, with two types of soup on the pub lunch menu.
The Victoria is run by Devizes-based brewer Wadworth, who have several others in Bristol including Nettle & Rye in Clifton and the Old England in Montpelier. Three of their beers are on the hand pulls – 6X, Horizon and IPA – while the likes of Amstel, Birra Moretti and Thatchers Gold pour through taps screwed straight into the reclaimed wood walls.

A range of Wadworth beers are on tap at the compact bar
The fire isn’t lit in the front portion of the pub on this weekday lunchtime but the TV above blares away, Judge Judy laying down her personal brand of the law. Black and white prints of old Westbury Village adorn the walls along with old farming notices, and a big brass fan hangs from the ceiling.
is needed now More than ever
Hot soup and a warm roll with butter melting into it arrives and suddenly it feels like being home ill from school and your mum bringing you lunch on the sofa while you absorb daytime television. It’s safe and nostalgic; an escape from a frantic world. Nurse a pint and recharge a long way away from the madness of the city centre.
