Pub of the week: The Cottage Inn
The Cottage Inn is a pub that you rarely see the inside of.
The waterfront spot is a renowned sun trap on a late summer evening, and with a hot air balloon rising gently over from Ashton Court as you sip a cold pint on the steps outside, it’s sheer perfection.
But going into the dim interior of the pub only to order will be a thing of the past, as The Cottage Inn has had a proper makeover: dragging it into the 21st century while still retaining some of that traditional charm that makes the place such a favourite with Bristolians.
is needed now More than ever
There’s a subtle nautical theme running through all the new decor, from the hand-lettered sign above the door proclaiming ‘Welcome Aboard’, to the blue tones in the paint and subway tiles which flank the back of the bar, and the prints on the walls in the dining area.
The whole effect is much brighter and lighter than before, and might help to bring some of the outside in on rainy days when sitting out isn’t an option.
A new menu, too, has been developed by the team, and boasts local and seasonal produce as well as daily specials. They’ve branched out somewhat from their pub grub staples (think Brixham potted crab and asparagus on toast, £8), although you’ll still find a good beer-battered fish and chips on the menu (from £9.50).
As waterfront pubs go, the drinks are at the top end of the price bracket (£5.05 for a pint of Peroni), but as a place to sit out on a sunny afternoon and watch the paddleboarders gently sloshing past (or falling in with a comedy squeal), you just can’t beat it.
