Pub of the Week: Inn on the Green
The warm interior of Inn on the Green, all dark wooden tables and sinkable sofas, feels like the sort of place you might find in the countryside, surrounded by lush greenery.
You might kick the mud off your Hunter wellies outside as you admire the hanging baskets, and then amble to the bar to order a drink and have a chat with a member of staff with ruddy cheeks who greets you like a long-lost member of the family.
Luckily for the residents of Horfield, it’s actually much closer to home, but with none of that country charm lost in transit. It’s far enough up the Gloucester Road strip to leave the townie lads behind, but with enough style and a good enough menu to attract more than the usual crowd of old boys, propping up the bar with a warm ale every night.
is needed now More than ever
The huge outdoor seating area strung with fairy-lights is a favourite of the younger crowd, playing pool and ping-pong in an environment mostly sheltered from the screams of the ambulances speeding to and from Southmead Hospital that drag you back into the reality of city living.
Inside, couples play boardgames at the tables and dine on fancy pub grub, like pork and leek sausages with crushed garlic new potatoes (£11), and beer-battered fish of the day with chips and pea puree (also £11), while, at the bar, 17 hand-pulls offer beer drinkers the ultimate choice.
I opt for one of the small sharing plates on the menu (£4, or £10 for three) to go with my pint, and, while tempted by the pigs in blankets with honey mustard glaze, I pick the BBQ pulled pork fries. They arrive piled high and steaming, a hot mess of salty skinny fries with a generous portion of pulled pork on top, all smothered in plenty of cheese.
They are hot and dirty and comforting, and it’s an absolute joy to sink into a sofa by the window and watch the world go by as I munch my way through with greasy fingers. A chap comes in with his husky and immediately become the most popular exhibit in Horfield, as the staff all rush around the bar to fuss the dog.
Of course this is the sort of pub that loves a dog – although it really ought to be a black Labrador to keep up that wonderful, cosy country vibe that Inn on the Green does so well.
