Pub of the Week: The Pineapple

By Martin Booth  Friday Jan 5, 2018

There is a corner of Bristol slowly turning into one of the best areas for beer in the city. And it’s just got another pub to add to the list.

The Pineapple on St George’s Road behind City Hall now has a new lease of life under custodians who also own the Gryphon on Colston Street.

Hidden behind thick metal shutters for more than a year, the pub is deceptively large inside and since reopening towards the end of last year following it is slowly finding its feet again.

It now joins a group of pubs within easy stumbling distance which make a first rate tour and are all conveniently located downhill of each other.

Start at Quinton House on Park Place in just up from the Clifton Triangle, walk down Pro-Cathedral Lane and take a right towards Eldon House, head down Jacob’s Wells Road to the Hope & Anchor and Bag of Nails, take a left along St George’s Road to the Three Tuns and now the Pineapple, and finish at the Lime Kiln a stone’s throw away.

Can you guess what this pub is called?

“We hope to offer the friendly, relaxed atmosphere that regulars at the Gryphon enjoy, but without the heavy metal,” new landlord John Ashby told Pints West.

“So for those of you that avoid coming to see me because you can’t bear the music, you’ve no excuse now!”

Among the beers currently on tap are two from Bristol breweries: Good Chemistry’s Field Work and Lost & Grounded’s Running With Sceptres.

It’s a good sign of the direction the Pineapple wants to take when it comes to beer, with other drinks including Urban Orchard and Ashridge ciders also on tap, and a selection of more than a dozen different whiskies on the back bar next to a few packets of Frazzles.

“I’m a person that wants to share,” a woman with short hair told the dreadlocked barman on a recent evening, and share away she did, with the barman barely saying a word as she told him all about her art collection and love of music – even leaving for a few minutes and returning with her banjo which she then asked him to retune.

As jazz flute played on the stereo and Greek voices drifted over from another side of the pub, a glance around revealed what looked like miniature pineapples on each table but on closer inspection turned out to be plants within shapely containers.

Opposite a car park and at the foot of Brandon Hill, the Pineapple now joins a choice selection of Bristol pubs ready to be discovered and rediscovered.
