Pub of the Week: The Star and Dove

By Ellie Pipe  Friday Oct 20, 2017

Walking into The Star and Dove is like returning home after a long absence – you know things have changed, but it’s initially hard to put your finger on exactly what.

Recently re-opened under new management, the historic Totterdown pub has undergone a makeover and the smell of fresh paint still lingers within the newly white and blue interior.

Out of habit or hope, eyes are immediately drawn to the corner of the bar that used to be piled high with homemade sausage rolls and scotch eggs, but alas it is empty.

This is a new era for the popular local and while the lack of freshly baked bar snacks is a temporary blow, there is much to look forward to and a menu of classic pub fare is promised by the end of the month.

There is a polite buzz of chatter from the handful of people settled at rustic wooden tables, seeking refuge from the wind and rain outside this Thursday evening.

A friendly smile greets customers from behind a well-stocked bar, where a good array of beers and cider are on display.

The requested bottle of red wine is quickly produced and, apologising that a bag of crisps was the only food option for now, the new manager enthusiastically details plans for a hearty menu of proper British pub food, featuring the likes of fish and chips, pies and more.

“They didn’t used to have the ‘Twitter’ birds on the wall,” remarks one drinker, referring to the new, blue dove stencils adorning the walls as conversations echo around the relatively minimalist room, that’s brightened up with the odd local artwork and a touch of greenery.

Stacks of Trivial Pursuit cards on the table are a nice, homely touch, as is the jar of dog treats behind the bar.

Only re-opened for two weeks, it is fair to say – this Thursday night at least- that The Star and Dove is yet to regain the bustling, busy vibe that made it a favourite destination for Bristolians from far and wide.

But with every effort being made to create a warm, welcoming, local feel for the wider community – dogs included – it’s not likely to take long for word to get around.

A born and bred Bristolian, the new manager has recently returned from Australia with his partner and the pair – both experienced in hospitality – are keen to make their mark and brimming with enthusiasm at the chance to breathe fresh life into the pub.

“It hasn’t changed out here,” says one woman delightedly, venturing out onto the rain-covered patio of the beer garden to the back of the pub.

“I keep trying to remember what it was like before,” adds the former regular, who like much of the community, rejoiced at the news of The Star and Dove’s reopening.

While still finding its feet, the welcome return of an old favourite is bound to have locals tottering down in their droves before long.
