Byron
In the race between three London burger chains to open the first restaurant in Bristol, Byron have been declared the victors with their opening on Queen’s Road pipping Meat Liquor and Five Guys into the lesser places on the podium.
Best known for being the burger of choice for Chancellor of the Exchequer George Osborne in order to look like a man of the people, Byron declare their hamburgers to be “proper”.
This seems to mean that the patties here are made with Scottish beef that is cooked medium and served in a soft brioche bun.
is needed now More than ever
My 6oz Shady burger (£9.95) – a special on the menu until next month said to be inspired by a famous diner in Connecticut – was served with cheese both melted and crispy, pickle relish, onion and ketchup.
It was good but no better than Chomp can make from their van (and soon in permanent premises on St Nicholas Street) or you can get in thousands of different options from The Burger Joint half a mile or so up Whiteladies Road and on North Street.
And it certainly wasn’t fast food either; on Tuesday lunchtime it took us half an hour from sitting down to be served with our food. Byron and its ilk don’t just serve proper burgers though, they are also proper restaurants.
They also claim that every restaurant in the chain is designed differently. In this former shop, the dining area is split across two levels with the most prominent feature stained white tiles that make some prison cells look clean.
There are eight burger options from £6.75 and it can easily become a more expensive than first thought meal, with the cheapest chips costing £2.95.
I washed down my burger with a can of Byron lager, made especially for the chain by the Camden Town Brewery.
