Chomp

By Martin Booth  Wednesday Nov 26, 2014

It seemed inappropriate to eat a Chomp burger with a knife and fork.

Its appearance on St Nicholas Street tucked behind St Nick’s Market is the first permanent bricks and mortar version of a business that over the last two years of roaming the streets of Bristol in a converted Citroen van has truly tested washing powder makers’ claims to remove all tough stains, such is the mess I have made on my shirts from chowing down on their morning bacon baps and lunchtime burgers.

There were more beards sported by hungry customers than items on the menu on the Tuesday evening we called in. But what a trio: a rib-eye steak and fries for £16, the home classic hamburger and the bloody veggie hamburger, both for £10 with fries and coleslaw. Look out for the return of the baps when doors open from 7.30am on Thursday morning.

Wash everything down – although perhaps not quite as early as breakfast – with the Chomp house brew, a 6% pale ale especially brewed for Chomp by Wiper & True. Drinks here are taken as seriously as the food, with numerous craft beers in bottles and cans, and 10 different bourbons.

But what of the burgers? My partner declared her spicy bean burger to be the best veggie burger she has eaten in Bristol, while my dry-aged beef burger also served with parmesan mayo, lettuce, tomato, mustard, ketchup, and a pickle and onion relish should be raised on a pedestal it’s that good.

The sound of sizzling meat could just be heard over the excited chatter in an upstairs room that can seat 40 people. Artificial grass around the restaurant gives some sense of the great outdoors. And takeaways are promised soon so you can get as messy as you like, with no knives and forks required.
