Dela – restaurant review

By Martin Booth  Sunday Sep 24, 2017

Greenery sprouts from all corners in Dela, including from a few windows that co-owner Lara Lindsay salvaged from a skip.

They can now be found next to the bar in a dining room within a former Victorian factory in the heart of Easton which once made bi-planes.

The imposing redbrick building a stone’s throw from St Mark’s Road is now occupied by Mivart Street Studios and its dozens of creative tenants, with talk on Friday morning downstairs of circus shows and art exhibitions.

Conversations were fuelled by Dela’s splendid variety of pastries and cakes (try the deliciously fruity frangipane tart if it’s on the counter).

You can even buy the cup you have enjoyed your coffee in, the pottery piled on top of each other and above the bottles of spirits featuring Bristol Dry Gin distilled in the basement of The Rummer in St Nick’s Market.

The following lunchtime, a reduced menu featured brunch dishes including granola, yoghurt and seasonal fruit compote (£3.50), and a ham hock, celeriac remoulade and cheddar toastie (£6.50).

Among the lunch specials, a pig’s cheek stew (£6) served with sourdough baked on the premises and sour cream, featured beautifully tender strips of pork; but a courgette, thyme and cauliflower tart with salad (£5) across the other side of the table wasn’t so inspiring.

It’s early days at the moment for Dela and one which has taken more than several months to come to fruition for Lara and Mike Orme, who tested the water with some pop-ups in Hart’s Bakery.

Dela means ‘share’ in Swedish, with the restaurant inspired by the Scandinavian approach to food and socialising.

On the opening week’s evening menu, there were four sharing boards currently on offer from £6 to £10 per person including Danish sourdough pancakes from squash to see bass ceviche, and beetroot-cured gravlax.

From coffee and cake in the morning to charred hispi cabbage and carafes of wine in the evening, Dela has got all bases covered. Bring your friends and get ready to share, Scandi-style.
