Dog Town: ‘Big, bold and extravagant hotdogs’ – restaurant review
Hotdogs should not be seen as inferior to burgers. That was what Squeezed owner Alex Hayes told Bristol24/7 as the ideas for Dog Town were taking shape.
And Hayes knows all about burgers, having been crowned national burger chef of the year back in 2019.
So what are his hotdogs like? They are big, bold and extravagant creations, packed high with toppings like a Pieminister mothership.
is needed now More than ever
Teetering on top of my Bandy Bandy made in a small kitchen within a single converted shipping container in Cargo 2 at Wapping Wharf were crunchy fried shallots, while a saffron potato salad is balanced on a Boom Slang.
The buns are light and bouncy, and the beef frankfurter is good but rather insignificant. Because it’s all about the toppings at Dog Town, which also include charred jalapeno queso sauce, masala barbecue sauce and roasted ketchup.
Eating these big dogs is a messy business. Don’t forget to pick up a few napkins from the counter before holding your hotdog in two hands and taking that first bite.
The hotdogs and chips – deliciously crispy skin-on fries with jerk-nori salt – also taste all the better washed down with beer slushies.
Coming in at 2.6% ABV, these ice cold beer slushies could not have been introduced to Bristol at a better time than the recent Bank Holiday weekend as the mercury continued to rise.
Are hotdogs the new burgers? I don’t envision a hotdog craze coming to Bristol anytime soon, but Dog Town certainly takes hotdogs to the next level.
