Fi Real

By Chris Brown  Thursday Oct 2, 2014

A new Caribbean cafe-cum-restaurant has opened in Old Market, offering a range of fish, vegetarian and vegan dishes with fresh fruit smoothies.

Fi Real launched yesterday after spending the last few months refurbishing the old bank building on West Street.

The business is run by a family who say they are Seventh Day Adventists, hence the reason the venue is closed every Saturday and closes early on a Friday.

We received a warm welcome as we checked out opening day yesterday, with staff insisting they want Fi Real to be an inclusive venue welcoming people from all communities.

The menu is small at present, but we chose Jamaica’s national signature dish ackee and saltfish, with rice and peas, and a vegetarian curry, also with rice and peas. For drinks, strawberry and banana smoothie for me, berry smoothie for my wife. And all serenaded with some reggae on the sound system. Total bill: £19.

The service was quick and the food excellent, and I am looking forward to dropping in on weekday evening, when the venue is open until 11pm. Definitely recommended if you are in the area.
